With news this morning of the death of former First Lady Betty Ford, we are showcasing the photographs we made during a two-day husband-wife campaign swing that Gerry and Betty Ford made through New Jersey during the unsuccessful 1976 Ford reelection campaign. Gerry Ford visited South Jersey and spoke at the NJ Education Association conference in Atlantic City. Betty Ford flew into Newark International Airport where she was greeted by a local CB radio club that presented her with a windbreaker bearing her CB Radio handle “First Mama” which she cheerfully put on, and posed for photos with the kids in the club. Then it was on to the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown, Monmouth County, where she spoke to a large and enthusiastic crowd that also included some protestors, as our photos show.
